GLObal Correspondent Grant

The GLObal Correspondent grant is a great opportunity for students seeking to use their creative skills to document their study abroad experiences and help promote their program. Undergraduate students participating in most program types are eligible to apply for a photography, videography, or blogging grant. (Journalism Residency Programs Abroad, Semester in Qatar, and Unaffiliated Programs are not eligible.)

Photography Grant

Award Details

Students will produce photo content from their study abroad experience to be used for GLO content, including social media, website, and other materials for program promotion.

Award of $150 disbursed following study abroad experience, contingent upon the quality of work provided.

Eligibility

The GLObal Correspondent photography grant is open to all 桃色视频undergraduate students who have confirmed their participation in any NorthwesternExchange, GESI, or Affiliated program.*

Grant recipients must be able to supply their own photography equipment (access to photo editing software upon return from study abroad experience recommended, but not required). Many smartphones have cameras that are adequate for this grant.

Recipients will be expected to take photo content that captures academic and cultural experiences in the country where they are studying abroad (i.e. cultural immersive experiences, experience of studying at their host university, field trips and outings, etc.).

Note that photo content featuring alcohol consumption or any activities excluded from GeoBlue health insurance coverage will not be accepted.

*Consideration for the grant is contingent upon the student being accepted into the 桃色视频program or exchange to which they applied. As noted above, Journalism Residency Programs Abroad, Semester in Qatar, and Unaffiliated Programs are not eligible.

Application Process & Guidelines

To be considered for the grant, students should submit five (5) original photos on any topic; photos may be edited. Photos may be samples from coursework or the student’s work portfolio, or taken primarily for the purpose of this grant. Applications should be submitted through the GLObal Correspondent grant application.

The time commitment for this project is estimated at 15 hours, which includes the time spent taking photographs while abroad as well as organizing photos into categories, adding captions and credits, and editing photographs. Grant recipients are expected to turn in their final project approximately 4 weeks after the program ends.

The grant will be disbursed upon the student’s return, following Global Learning Office approval of the photography content supplied.

Videography Grant

Award Details

Students will produce video content from their study abroad experience to be used for GLO content, including social media, website, and other materials for program promotion.

Award of $250 disbursed following study abroad experience, contingent upon the quality of work provided.

Eligibility

Grant recipients must be able to supply their own standard videography equipment, and should have access to video editing software upon their return from their study abroad experience. Many smartphones have cameras that are adequate for this grant.

Recipients will be expected to record video content that captures academic and cultural experiences in the country where they are studying abroad (i.e. cultural immersive experiences, experience of studying at their host university, field trips and outings, etc.).

To be considered for the grant, students should submit one (1) video approximately 1-2 minutes in length that has been completely self-generated and self-edited on any topic. Videos may be samples from coursework or the student’s work portfolio, or taken primarily for the purpose of this grant. Videos should be posted to YouTube or another digital media sharing site, and the link should be submitted through the GLObal Correspondent grant application.

The time commitment for this project is estimated at 25 hours, which includes the time spent shooting footage while abroad as well as editing the video upon student’s return. Grant recipients are expected to turn in their final project approximately 4 weeks after the program ends.

The grant will be disbursed upon the student’s return, following Global Learning Office approval of the video content supplied.

Blogging Grant

Award Details

Students will produce blog content from their study abroad experience to be published on the GLO student blog, as well as used in other GLO materials for program promotion.

Award of $150 disbursed following study abroad experience, contingent upon the quality of work provided.

Eligibility

The GLObal Correspondent blogging grant is open to all 桃色视频undergraduate students who have confirmed their participation in NorthwesternExchange, GESI, or Affiliated program.*

Recipients will be expected to publish 7-8 blog posts (250-500 words each) about academic, cultural, and personal experiences in the country where they are studying abroad. Topics may include courses abroad, daily life, language, cultural reflection, program excursions, personal identity, academic major, and more.

All blog posts must include at least one photo; thus, grant recipients must be able to supply their own photography equipment. Many smartphones have cameras that are adequate for this grant.

Application Process & Guidelines

To be considered for the grant, students should submit a one-page (250-word) writing sample on one of the following topics: 1) Favorite restaurant in Evanston, 2) Best class you’ve taken at Northwestern, or 3) Recent event you attended. The writing sample should demonstrate cohesive and interesting discussion of a topic and should be edited for spelling, grammar, and structure. The writing sample should be your own work. Applications should be submitted through the GLObal Correspondent grant application.

The time commitment for this project is estimated at 15 hours, which includes the time spent writing blog posts, uploading and captioning photos, and tagging blog posts in the blog site. Grant recipients are expected to blog throughout their time abroad, with a maximum of one post written upon return from study abroad.

The grant will be disbursed upon the student’s return, following Global Learning Office approval of the blog content supplied.
