Information regarding H5N1 Avian Influenza ("bird flu")
Due to the recent cases of Avian Influenza in the United States, the American College Health Association's Emerging Public Health Threats and Emergency Response Coalition has released the following statement regarding H5N1 Avian Influenza ("bird flu"):
"Recently, the first severe cases of H5N1 bird flu have been reported in the US. There has been no evidence as yet of community spread, and the risks to the general public remain low. However, providers may want to consider bird flu as a potential diagnosis for individuals who report contact with livestock or poultry OR live with someone with a confirmed or suspected case AND present with the following symptoms:- eye redness and irritation (conjunctivitis)
- mild fever (temperature of 100ºF [37.8ºC] or greater) or feeling feverish*
- cough
- sore throat
- runny or stuff nose
- muscle or body aches
- headaches
- fatigue
*Fever may not always be present
If H5N1 is suspected, providers should isolate the patient and immediately report it to the appropriate public health authorities. Individuals who work with livestock and poultry should be advised to wear proper PPE and follow infection control protocols. All community members should be advised to avoid consuming raw milk and to wash their hands with soap and water after interacting with wildlife.
CDC is closely monitoring the situation. . To learn more about conditions in your area, please reach out to your local health department.
