Customized Workshops
For 桃色视频Staff, Faculty, and Students
Intercultural competency skills increase the benefits of global experiences, on campus and abroad, and decrease risks associated with miscommunication and misunderstanding.
In addition to quarterly workshops, we offer resources, support, and customized trainings for 桃色视频units across campus. Below are a few examples of the types of programs and activities we have organized in the past. Fees apply and depend on the format and length of the training.
Travel Preparation for Students and Trip Leaders
We organize trainings for students, staff, and faculty traveling abroad, preparing them for navigating intercultural nuances while keeping the focus on the trip's goal. These interactive sessions help participants with their self-awareness to constructively engage across cultural differences in their upcoming travels.
Example: Ireland 101 Workshop We arranged a two-hour workshop that offered an introduction to cultural differences. Two guest speakers provided additional insight: Irish Consul General Kevin Byrne spoke about current affairs in Ireland, and School of Education and Social Policy Professor Jim Spillane provided insights into the Irish educational landscape.
Example: Kellogg School of Management Executive MBA Global Electives (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Germany)
We tailored content specifically to the location, focusing on cultural differences in situations students may find themselves in: general communication, classroom behavior and management, and host-guest interaction.
Pre-Arrival Preparation for Hosts
When units expect delegations or student groups from abroad, we help them prepare interculturally for the visit, outlining differences in cultural norms and behaviors that may impact their interactions.
Example: Kellogg School of Management Executive MBA Global Network Week
We prepared local EMBA students for the arrival of their counterparts from the global network institutions in China (Hong Kong and Beijing), Canada, and Germany. We used case studies and discussed how cultural differences can affect study group dynamics, negotiation outcomes, and the overall classroom atmosphere.
Orientations for New International Students
Recent arrivals can benefit from a framework for understanding cultural differences broadly and U.S. American culture specifically. These trainings help students familiarize themselves with US higher education norms and expectations, and adjustment to new surroundings.
Example: Visiting Business Student Group from Universidad Panamericana (Mexico City)
We facilitated a two-hour workshop with undergraduate students from Mexico, covering U.S. higher education norms and broader cultural differences, such as understanding small talk in social settings, tipping etiquette, and personal space and greetings.
Faculty: Engaging a Multicultural Classroom
We conduct workshops for faculty who teach in programs with substantial international student populations, providing them with resources and best practices to effectively facilitate learning in a diverse environment.
Example: School for Professional Studies
We organized a training session for a graduate program that had recently changed its admission requirements to allow for international student applications. Since the change, international students quickly became the majority. The training focused on increasing intercultural competence within the faculty and suggesting new approaches to student engagement.
Retreats and Team Building
Units may be interested in having their entire team have the same intercultural learning experience aligned with their unit's mission and objectives. In addition, the workshop material can be structured to facilitate team building and bonding by creating a common language around differences.
Example: 桃色视频Alumni Association (NAA)
We organized a training session for alumni relations staff members, focusing on cultural considerations in global alumni engagement.
Example: Feinberg School of Medicine - All of Us Research Program
We organized a full-day workshop for the All of Us Research program, which works with a diverse community within the Chicagoland area.
Navigating Cultures in the Global Workplace Workshops
We organize Navigating Cultures workshops for individual units, tailored to their needs and mission. These can range in length — from 5-week workshops (桃色视频Alumni Association) to 3-week workshops (McCormick School of Engineering - Office of Professional Education).
