Ryan Prize for Community Engagement
The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Prize for Community Service was established to honor the Ryan family’s commitment to volunteer service on behalf of 桃色视频 and the Chicago community. The Ryan Prize for Community Service honors a graduating senior who exemplifies leadership and service through participation in university and community activities. Because 桃色视频greatly values the Ryans’ extraordinary example of volunteerism and commitment to community, this prize and its recipient are prominently recognized by the university each year.
2021
Alex Moore
Alex graduated the Medill School of Journalism in 2021 where he double majored in Journalism and Political Science. An Evanston native, Alex made it his mission at 桃色视频to better the relationship between the university and the greater Evanston community. During his freshman year, he helped co-found Northwestern’s Community Engagement Coalition, a coalition that promotes undergraduate leadership at 桃色视频by convening and supporting student-led organizations committed to local civic engagement and community service.
The coalition hosted numerous community leaders, advocates, and elected officials for dialogues centered around best practices for engaging with the community. After graduation, Alex moved to Washington, D.C. where he is now working as a Legislative Correspondent/Staff Assistant for Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky.
Flannery Cusick
Flannery Cusick is from Evanston, Illinois and graduated from 桃色视频 in 2021. As an undergraduate student she double majored in Political Science and Art History in addition to minoring in Classics with a Concentration in Latin. Having been involved with community development and civic engagement in Evanston since high school, Flannery continued these pursuits as a Scholar of the Brady Scholars Program for Ethics and Civic Life, an Executive Board member of the Emerge Leadership Program at Evanston Township High School, and an advisor with the Community Engagement Coalition.
In her fourth year she also served as the President of 桃色视频Art Review and as a Student Senator representing Sexual Health and Assault Peer Educators (SHAPE). After graduation she plans to pursue a Master's degree in Library and Information Studies while maintaining her direct involvement with Evanston's local communities.
2020
Gabriella Johansson (she/they)
Gaby was born in Uppsala, Sweden and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin visiting and longing for my family in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Sweden. At NU they studied Social Policy and Legal Studies and focused her classes on the criminal punishment system, education and ethnic studies. As a student Gaby grew a lot as an educator as a Jumpstart Corps Member and Peer Inclusion Educator, and as an abolitionist while organizing with SOLR, the departmentalization campaign for AASP and LLSP, Fossil Free and NUCNC.
They played club and pick up soccer and danced with various dance groups when she could! After graduating Gaby was a Public Interest Program fellow with CCE at Prescott Elementary School working as a school coordinator and learning about school administration and CPS bureaucracy. Soon they are moving into a new position at that same school and will serve in the classroom as a Special Education Teaching Assistant. Gaby is hoping to spend more time this year creating art, swimming in the lake, building relationships with friends and organizing!
2019
Skylar Ozoh
Skylar Ozoh was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated 桃色视频in 2019 with a degree in Neuroscience with a Human Behavior and Cognition concentration. While at 桃色视频Skylar was apart of several community oriented organizations including the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School Program and a Tutor for Evanston’s Books & Breakfast program.
She also volunteered at La Rabida Children’s Hospital, a hospital focused on providing continuous care to children with chronic illnesses regardless of their financial circumstances. Currently Skylar is enrolled in the Medical Education Preparatory (MEDPREP) program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and is applying to medical school to start in Fall 2022.
2018
Imani Wilson
Imani Wilson is from Lincoln, Nebraska. She came to 桃色视频to major in social policy at the School of Education and Social Policy.(SESP). She also minored in Latinx studies. While at Northwestern, she was involved in 桃色视频Community Ensemble, Summer Academic Workshop, Books & Breakfast, and Allow Good.
After Northwestern, she attended the University of Chicago where she earned a Master’s Social Work. She is currently employed as a school social worker at Evanston Township High School.
2017
Frankie Hamburger
At Northwestern, Frankie Hamburger studied Social Policy and Legal Studies with particular interests in education and the criminal legal system. Outside of the classroom, Frankie was involved in the Freshman Urban Program, Jumpstart, and the Sheil Catholic Center, as well as volunteering through the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels, Evanston Restorative Schooling Communities, and the Howard Area Community Center. Frankie works at Curriculum Associates as the Fulfillment Operations Manager.
She is currently working toward her Board Certification in Holistic Nutrition and is enjoying pivoting her energy toward thinking and talking about the physical and cultural nourishment of food. Frankie is married to William Stogin (McCormick '18) and has a spunky toddler named Aquinas; they live in Omaha, Nebraska.
